Sociology Programs

The department offers programs leading to Bachelor, Honours Bachelor, and Master of Arts degrees.

Students are also advised of the interdisciplinary minor concentrations in Gerontology, Northern Studies, and Women's Studies.

1. BA (Sociology Major)

Three Year program
The BA basic requirement is an overall average of 60% in all sociology courses.

First Year:
(a) Sociology 1100
(b) Two FCEs from Group I (see Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(c) One FCE from Group II (see First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(d) One FCE elective

Second Year:
(a) Sociology 2111 and 2911
(b) One FCE in Sociology
(c) Three FCE electives selected in consultation with the Department

Third Year:
(a) Two FCEs in sociology at the third or fourth year level
(b) Three FCE electives selected in consultation with the Department

Note:
A student who has qualified for the BA (Sociology Major) may qualify for an Honours BA (Sociology) if requirements for honours standing have been met, by satisfactorily completing the additional required sociology courses at the honours level.

2. Honours BA (Sociology Major)

Four Year program
A student may enter the Honours BA program in Sociology after the first year of another program providing a 70% grade has been attained in Sociology 1100. An overall 70% average in subsequent Sociology courses through each of the following years is required.

First Year :
Same as for BA (Sociology Major)

Second Year:
Same as for BA (Sociology Major)

Third Year:
(a) Sociology 3310, 3311, 3410, 3411
(b) Three FCE electives

Fourth Year:
(a) Sociology 4313 and 4411
(b) One FCE in Sociology at the third or fourth year level
(c) One FCE in Sociology at the fourth year level
(d) Two FCE electives chosen in consultation with the Department

3. Honours BA (Sociology) with Major Concentration in Gerontology

Four Year program

First Year :
(a) Gerontology 1110 and 1130
(b) Sociology 1100
(c) One FCE from Group I (see Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(d) One FCE from Group II (see First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(e) One FCE elective

Second Year:

4. Honours BA (Sociology and Women's Studies Majors)

(The Honours BA (History) with Major Concentration in Women's Studies program was removed from the Calendar, effective 20May08, and replaced with the Honours BA (History and Women's Studies Majors) program.)


5. Sociology Minor Program

An overall average of at least 60% in Sociology courses is required. The Sociology Minor Program consists of 3 FCEs in Sociology:
(a) Sociology 1100
(b) One FCE in Sociology at the second or third year level
(c) One FCE in Sociology at the third or fourth year level

6. Concurrent Programs with Education

A. The Honours BA (Sociology) is offered concurrently with a Bachelor of Education degree (P/J and J/I Specializations only). Prior to the Professional Year, students should follow the HBA program requirements; however, they should also include the prior to entry into the Professional Year requirements of the Primary-Junior or Junior-Intermediate Specializations, as listed on pages 70-71. Note:
For students in concurrent honours bachelor degree programs, 1.5 FCEs of required Education courses will be taken instead of electives in the HBA program, prior to entering the Professional Year.

B. The BA (Sociology) 3-year degree is offered concurrently with a Bachelor of Education degree (P/J and J/I Specializations only). 7. Master of Arts Degree in Sociology
