Music Programs

The Department offers programs leading to Honours Bachelor of Music and Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music) Degrees.

1. Honours BMus

Four Year program
The Honours Bachelor of Music provides students with a comprehensive background in all aspects of music theory, history and performance. This program is designed to prepare students to pursue graduate work or to enter the work force as professional musicians.

First Year:
(a) Music 1311 and 1312
(b) Music 1340
(c) Music Performance: Primary I
(d) Music Performance: Secondary I
(e) One half-course elective
(f) One FCE elective from Group I or II (see Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(g) Music 1318 and 1333

Second Year:
(a) Music 2311 and 2312
(b) Music 2341
(c) Music Performance: Primary II
(d) Music Performance: Secondary II
(e) One half-course elective
(f) One FCE from Group II (see First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)
(g) Music 2333 and either Music 2332 or 2334

Third Year:
(a) Music 3311 and 3312
(b) Music 3371 and 3372
(c) Music Performance: Primary III or Music 3800

2. Honours BA (Music Major)

Four Year program
The Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music Major) program, while offering a wide range of courses in music, allows students to take a number of non­music electives, including three or more courses in a secondary area. This program is designed especially for students who wish to pursue a career in music education.

First Year:

(d) One FCE from Group I (see Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)

3. Concurrent Programs with Education

A. The Honours BA (Music) is offered concurrently with a Bachelor of Education degree. Prior to the Professional Year, students should follow the HBA program requirements; however, they should also include the prior to entry into the Professional Year requirements of the Primary-Junior, Junior-Intermediate, or Intermediate-Senior Specializations, as listed on pages 70-71. Note:
For students in concurrent honours bachelor degree programs, 1.5 FCEs of required Education courses will be taken instead of electives in the HBA program, prior to entering the Professional Year.
