Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistant appointments may be offered to some full-time graduate students (including Visa students) at a rate of $7,747 at the Master's level; and $8,449 at the Doctoral level (2005-2006 rates). A regular appointment constitutes a maximum of 270 hrs of work over the Fall and Winter terms averaging not more than 10 hrs of work per week. Representative duties include, but are not limited to: preparing classes, teaching, demonstrating, leading seminars, supervising laboratories, marking, consulting with students, holding assigned office hours, setting tests, examination and lab sets, conducting field trips, and providing other academic support assistance. A graduate student is eligible to hold a maximum of two full-time appointments at the Master's level and/or three full-time appointments at the Doctoral level.

Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries

Conditions of Graduate Awards

Graduate scholarships are based on academic merit. Graduate bursaries are based on financial need, although there may be a merit component to the bursary. Where the award designates that an application is required, only those students who have submitted the specified application by the deadline will be considered for those awards. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered. Successful applicants only will be notified. The University reserves the right to make changes without prior notice to the terms, conditions and award values listed in the Calendar.

Recipients of scholarships, awards and bursaries must be registered in order to receive funding. Graduate awards are applied to any outstanding balance on the student's account. Students are entitled to their awards only after their fees are paid in full. Only students with credit account balances will be refunded the balance of the overpayment. Overpayment refunds of these awards will be issued at the end of September, January and May each year.

Autism Scholars Awards

Awarded for research pertaining to autism, especially its diagnosis and treatment, improvements to autism care, prevention and wellness strategies. CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master's Awards
$17,500/year (non-renewable)
Awarded to students in the first or second year of a full-time Master's degree in a health related field at a Canadaian institution. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Applications available at: www.cihr.ca. All application documentation must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

H.O.P.E. Award (High Output and Publication Excellence)
$600 and an Award Certificate Presented
at an Awards Ceremony
Eligible publication period (September 1 - December 31). Awarded once per term to a graduate student who is the first author of a peer-reviewed publication. Publications are eligible within one year of a student's graduation. Submissions can be made by graduate students, supervisors or any other colleague. "In press" or "Accepted" manuscripts will be considered. All submissions must be accompanied by a copy of the manuscript and a copy of the editor's letter accepting the manuscript. All submission documentation must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

MacKenzie King Scholarships
Available to students who have graduated from a Canadian university and are pursuing graduate studies in Canada or elsewhere. Application available at: www.mkingscholarships.ca. All application documentation must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS)

Awarded to students pursuing full-time or part-time graduate studies at the master's or doctoral level in the natural sciences or engineering. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and must have A- (80%) in each of the last two years of study. Applicants must have research collaboration with industry partner willing to contribute time and funding toward the scholarship. Applications available at: www.nserc.ca. NSERC Northern Research Internships
Up to $10,000 from NSERC - $2,000 from Northern partner - $2,000 from Lakehead University.
Awarded to Master's or Doctoral students in the natural sciences or engineering; Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Applicants must have secured a formal agreement with a northern partner who will contribute $2,000 to the internship or will provide in-kind support. Awarded to a high-ranking student entering a full-time graduate program, whose intended area of thesis research must involve human biology and take place at the Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre. ALCES Graduate Award of Merit

Established in 1999, by the North American Moose Group and "ALCES a Journal Devoted to the Management and Biology of the Moose". Awarded to a full-time student in a graduate program, pursuing research on the biology and ecology of moose, on the basis of financial need. Recipient must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant of Canada and must have lived in Ontario for at least twelve months in a row. Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST)

Awarded to full-time students enrolled in graduate programs in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Kinesiology, Mathematical Sciences and Physics at Lakehead University. The Province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of this amount and Lakehead University provides one-third. Awarded to students entering a full-time Doctoral program. Recipients must have an entering average of 85% (A) or equivalent. Award will reduce the international tuition fees to the level of domestic fees. Renewable up to three years upon confirmation of full-time status and academic average of 85% (A). Doctoral programs will submit their recommendations to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. No application required.

Professional Development Bursary
Maximum: $500 per Term
Awarded to full-time graduate students for travel in connection with the pursuit of professional development through conference presentations and participation in other academic activities which enhance the reputation of graduate studies at Lakehead University. Applications are considered on the basis of merit, financial need and the availability of funds. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant of Canada and must have lived in Ontario for at least twelve months in a row. Students must apply prior to the time of the conference or event. Professional Development Bursary application required.

Awarded to a high-ranking graduate student who has completed one of the following courses: Anthropology 3136, 3811, 4219 or 4417; and whose graduate research is forensic-related. Ontario Women's Health Research Awards - Doctoral

Rhodes Scholarships

Soroptimist Foundation of Canada Grants for Women

J.H. Stewart Reid Memorial Fellowship
