Lakehead University's Department of Visual Arts offers a four-year program leading to an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (HBFA). The program combines practical, theoretical and critical approaches to the study of visual art with art history and other courses providing the historical and intellectual basis common to a university education. A unique feature of the Department of Visual Arts at Lakehead University is the annual juried student art exhibition which occurs every spring at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.

Students graduating with an HBFA degree are able to practice as professional artists or pursue further studies and involvement in the visual arts. An HBFA degree combined with the one year program in education prepares students for an Ontario teaching certificate. A three-year BA (Visual Arts) program is in place for students wishing a basic program in Visual Arts.

Courses in the Visual Arts are conducted in the new Music and Visual Arts Centre on campus where there are studios devoted to painting, design, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking.

Student assessment in studio courses is based on practical work accomplished in the studio and, therefore, class attendance is critical.

Notes:

1. The Department of Visual Arts organizes a group excursion to a major art centre at least once a year. Students are urged to participate at least once during the four years of the program.
2. Lakehead University Department of Visual Arts reserves the right to retain suitable student works for the Lakehead University Northern Art Collection.
