Environmental Studies/Science Programs

Students graduating from programs within the Division of Environmental Studies will be awarded either an Honours Bachelor of Environmental Studies (HBES) or an Honours Bachelor of Environmental Science (HBESc).

1. HBESc (Biology Major)

Four Year program

First Year:
(a) Environmental Studies 1120
(b) Biology 1110 and 1130
(c) Chemistry 1110, 1130
(d) One full course equivalent (FCE) from Group I (see Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Regulations, First Year Arts Program Grouping Requirements)

2. HBESc (Earth Science Major)

Notes:
1. Chemistry
Students who lack Gr. 12 U Chemistry or its equivalent must register for Chemistry 1050 and 1070. After successful completion of Chemistry 1050/1070, one of the following will apply:
(a) In Year 2, Chemistry 1110 and 1130 are taken as electives
(b) If the final mark in Chemistry 1050/1070 is 80% or higher, the Department may waive the Chemistry 1110/1130 requirement.
2. Mathematics
Students who lack high school MHF4U (Advanced Functions) or its equivalent must register for Mathematics 1051 and 1077. Mathematics 1210 and 1230 or 1151 and 1152 or 1171 and 1172 is taken in Year 2.

5. Minor in Environmental Science

A minor in Environmental Science will consist of a minimum overall average of 60% in four (4) FCEs different from and in addition to the courses in the student's major; however, only courses outside the major can be counted towards a minor. A Minor in Environmental Science will include:

(a) Environmental Studies 1120/Geography 1120
(b) Environmental Studies 2210/Biology 2210
(c) Five half-courses from Environmental Studies Electives (Science Stream). At least one FCE must be at the third or fourth-year level.
Notes:
1. Students may qualify for only one of the Minor in Environmental Science or the Minor in Environmental Studies.
2. If Geography 1120 or Biology 2210 is also required for the student's major, a substitution must be made from the Environmental Studies Electives (Science Stream).

6. Minor in Environmental Studies

A minor in Environmental Studies will consist of a minimum overall average of 60% in four (4) FCEs different from and in addition to the courses in the student's major; however, only courses outside the major can be counted towards a minor. A Minor in Environmental Studies will include:

(a) Environmental Studies 1120/Geography 1120
(b) Environmental Studies 2210/Biology 2210
(c) Five half-courses from Environmental Studies Electives (Science Stream or Arts Stream). At least one FCE must be at the third or fourth-year level.

7. Concurrent Programs with Education

The following degree programs in Environmental Science/Studies are offered concurrently with a Bachelor of Education (Intermediate-Senior Specialization only): HBESc (Biology), HBESc (Geography), HBES (Geography). Prior to the Professional Year, students should follow the HBESc or HBES program requirements; however, they should also include the Prior to Entry into the Professional Year requirements of the Intermediate-Senior Specialization for the Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Programs. Note:
For students in concurrent honours bachelor degree programs, 2 (two) FCEs of required Education courses will be taken instead of electives in the HBESc or HBES program, prior to entering the Professional Year.
