Teachables

Programs are divided according to the age and grade level at which the student intends to teach as follows:

Primary/Junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6). Teachers at this level must be prepared to teach students all subjects so programs include courses in a variety of subjects taught in the elementary school. No specific teachable is required.

Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 to 10). Teachers at this level must be prepared to teach students all subjects so programs include courses in a variety of subjects taught in the elementary school. Students must also have additional background (3 full course equivalents in one of the followingteachable subjects, with at least one half-course (i.e., a minimum of 0.5 FCE) at the third- or fourth-year level: Computer Studies (Computer Science degree required), English, French as a Second Language (5 FCEs required), Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music - Instrumental (Music Degree required), Music - Vocal (Music Degree required), Native Languages (5 FCEs required), Native Studies, Science - General*, and Visual Arts (Visual Arts or Fine Arts Degree required).

*Science courses used towards the General Science teachable may be a combination from at least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology (Science stream only), Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science Stream only), Geography (Science stream only) (Note: Geography 3693 not accepted for Science credit), Geology, Meteorology (see General Science and Physics courses), and Physics.

The Professional Year includes a methodology course on the curriculum and instruction of the teachable subject. In J/I the teachable subject is normally, but not necessarily always, the same as the major subject of the bachelor's degree.

Exception:
Health and Physical Education - Students are not required to have 0.5 FCE at the third or fourth-year level.

Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7 to 12). Intermediate/Senior students must take courses in twoteachable subjects, Students must have a minimum of 5 FCEs in their first teachable and a minimum of 3 FCEs in their second teachable. At least one half-course (i.e., a minimum of 0.5 FCE) must be at the third- or fourth-year level in each teachable subject and exceptions to this are noted below.

Exceptions:
Business Studies - Accounting - Business can only be taken as a first teachable. At least 1 FCE of the Business courses must be in Accounting.
Computer Studies - Requires a Computer Science degree.
Environmental Science - Students who designate Environmental Science as a teachable will be streamed into the Outdoor Ecological and Experiential Education (OE3) cohort. Entry into OE3 requires either 5 FCEs (first teachable) or 3 FCEs (second teachable). Courses used towards Environmental Science may be any combination from at least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology (Science stream only), Astronomy (see General Science courses), Biology, Chemistry, Geography (Science stream only) (Note: Geography 3693 not accepted for Science credit), Environmental Studies (Science stream only), Geology, Meteorology (see General Science and Physics courses), Outdoor Recreation, and Physics.
French (as a Second Language) - Requires 5 FCEs in French for a first or second teachable.
Health and Physical Education - Requires a Kinesiology or Physical Education degree if applying as afirst teachable. Students applying for health and physical education as a second teachable are not required to have 0.5 FCE at the third- or fourth-year level.
Music - Music degree required.
Native Languages (with the language stipulated) - Requires 5 FCEs in Native Languages for a first or second teachable. Students may use a Native Language Teacher Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers to qualify for Native Language as a second teachable.
Science - General - Courses used toward General Science may be any combination from at least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology (Science stream only), Astronomy (see General Science courses), Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science stream only), Geography (Science stream only) (Note: Geography 3693 not accepted for Science credit), Geology, Meteorology (see General Science and Physics courses), and Physics.
Social Sciences - General - Can only be taken as a second teachable (requiring 3 FCEs). Courses counted toward this teachable may be any combination from at least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology and Women's Studies.
Visual Arts - Requires a Visual Arts or Fine Arts degree.

The Professional Year includes methodology courses on the curriculum and instruction in the teachable subjects. In I/S the teachable subject is normally, but not necessarily always, the same as the major subject of the bachelor's degree. The second teachable may be the second major of a double major degree, a minor with the major in a bachelor's degree, a recognized minor noted on the student's transcript, or merely the required 3 FCEs (except French and Native Languages, which require 5 FCEs).
