The following 2013-2014 Endowed and Non-Endowed Donor In-Course Scholarship and Award Funds for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (with no application) are available. Note: Instead of dollar amount, "Not Available", indicates that donor funds are unavailable for this year.


ENGLISH

The Evelyn Halliday Scholarship
$200 (EVHSI)
Awarded yearly, in perpetuity, on the basis of high academic standing to a student registered full-time in the final year of an Honours program in English at Lakehead University.

George Merrill Scholarship in English
$400 (GMESI)
Created in memory of Dr. George Merrill, a long-time faculty member of Lakehead University, from 1963, until his retirement in 1997. Awarded to a student majoring in English and who has taken a minimum of one course in the study of Shakespeare.

Iris Jean Richards Memorial Award - English
"Not Available" (IRENI)
Established, in perpetuity, in 1969 by the late Professor Tim Ryan; Dean, Faculty of Arts, in memory of his wife; awarded annually to a full or part-time student in a Social Sciences and Humanities Degree program who, at the end of the first year, obtains the highest marks in English 1111 and English 1112.

The John and Florence Schreiber In-Course Memorial Scholarship
$1,200 (JFFSI)
Awarded on the basis of high academic standing to an in-course student in the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree program, majoring in English.

HISTORY

Ernst Zimmermann Scholarship in History
$350 (ZIMSI)
Awarded to a student at the Thunder Bay campus entering fourth year or third year (in that order) in the Honours History program. Consideration will be given to the student who has taken the greatest number of history courses in these areas: European History, Latin American History, Asian History. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Department of History.

LANGUAGES

German Canadian Association at the Lakehead Award
$100 (GCLAI)
Awarded to an in-course student to recognize outstanding progress in the study of German. Awarded on the recommendation of the German instructor in the Department of Languages.

Emma and William Kraft Memorial Prize
$150 (EWKMI)
Established by Mrs. Hilja Rydholm and supported by the family of William and Emma Kraft in their memory. Awarded to the student with the highest mark in any Finnish course. Preference shall be given to Canadian born student having Finnish ancestry.

Lisa Richardson Memorial Scholarship in Classics
$550 (LRMSI)
Created in 2007 by family, friends, and colleagues in loving memory of Lisa Richardson, a long-time professor in English and Classics at Lakehead University, and a valued member of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Awarded to a high-ranking full-time student in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, with a demonstrated interest in the Classics. Recipient will be chosen based on a Faculty recommendation.


MUSIC

William H. Buset Scholarship
3 x $300 (BUSSI)
Awarded to one high ranking student registered full-time in Business, Music and Visual Arts.

Terry Fiorito Memorial Award
$100 (TFMAI)
Created by family and friends in loving memory of Terry Fiorito, local musician, who passed away in 2001 at the age of 46. Awarded to a music student on the basis of exceptional skill in performance.

Florence Higgins Music Scholarship
$650 (FHMSI)
Awarded to a high ranking student enrolled in Music.

The Emilia and Celeste Morellato Memorial Music Scholarship
$500 (EMCSI)
Awarded to a deserving undergraduate student in the Department of Music.

Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Music
$100 (MMMUI)
To be awarded on the basis of competition to an outstanding music student on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Music.

A.L. Musselman In-Course Silver Jubilee Scholarship in Music
$100 (SJAMI)
Awarded on the basis of competition to an outstanding performance student in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Honours Bachelor of Arts (Music) program or the Honours Bachelor of Music program. Awarded on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Music.

PHILOSOPHY

The Doan, Penelhum, White Award in Philosophy
"Not Available" (DPWAI)
Created to honour the contributions of past faculty members in Philosophy, the Doan, Penelhum, White Award will be granted to a student entering 4th year of the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree program, majoring in Philosophy, based on a 'B+' average.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Hubert Badanai Scholarship - Political Science
$300 (HBSPI)
Awarded on the basis of high academic standing to a second or third year student registered as a Political Science major.

The Geoffrey Engholm Award
$250 (GEASI)
The Geoffrey Engholm Award was established by his friends upon his retirement from full time service with the University in 1984. It is to be presented annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in Political Science.

Margaret R. Sideen Memorial Award for Political Science
$500 (MSMAI)
Established by the Thunder Bay Municipal League and awarded, in perpetuity, to a student who has shown academic proficiency and leadership, and who is registered in his/her second, third or fourth year in Political Science. The student must be registered in or have taken a minimum of two courses dealing with Canadian Politics. Preference will be given to students from the nineteen municipalities served by the Thunder Bay Municipal League. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Department of Political Science.

VISUAL ARTS

Dr. and Mrs. J.R. Augustine Lakehead University 30th Anniversary Visual Arts Award
$250 (AUGVI)
Awarded to an in-course second or third year student registered full-time in the Visual Arts program who demonstrates excellence in studio work. Awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Visual Arts.

Awarded to one high ranking student registered full-time in Business, Music and Visual Arts.

Mr. and Mrs. James MacAllan Munro Family Memorial Prize - Visual Arts
$100 (MMPAI)
To be awarded annually on the basis of competition (the Annual Juried Student Spring Exhibition - March/April) and on the recommendation of the Chair, Department of Visual Arts to an outstanding Lakehead University student in the field of painting, drawing, ceramics, water-colour, print-making or sculpture at the Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

Ruth Tye McKenzie Award in Visual Arts
$1,000 (A-RTMAI)
Awarded to a visual arts student with a minimum 70% GPA and who demonstrates an exceptional ability in visual arts.

Annie Werbicka Childs Visual Arts Scholarship
$2,500 (A-WCVSI)
Awarded to a student in any year level of the Visual Arts program on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated exceptional ability in visual arts.


WOMEN'S STUDIES

Helen E. H. Smith Memorial Award in Women's Studies
$800 (HSWAI)
Awarded to a student who is currently enrolled in a major or joint major in Women's Studies who obtained the highest mark in Women's Studies 1100 the previous year. Awarded on the recommendation of the Women's Studies Department.
