The following 2013-2014 Endowed and Non-Endowed Donor In-Course Scholarship and Award Funds for the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies by application are available. Note: Instead of dollar amount, "Not Available", indicates that donor funds are unavailable for this year.

ANY MAJOR

The Hayes Family Arts and Science Scholarship (Orillia Campus)
$500 (O2-LJHSI)
Created by Drs. Laurie Schultz Hayes and James Todd Hayes for full-time students in the third or fourth year of the HBASc (Interdisciplinary Studies Major) at the Orillia Campus who have achieved an 80+ average. Financial need may also be a consideration. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and must have resided in Ontario for 12 consecutive months prior to receiving this award. Dr. Laurie Schultz Hayes was Lakehead University's Vice-President (Academic) and Provost when the Orillia campus was proposed and opened. She designed and championed the HBASc as an interdisciplinary major from the start. The Drs. Hayes and their children believe in the value of studying the arts and sciences together and want to support students who share their interdisciplinary commitment. Gerald V. Hess Memorial Award
$300 (GVHMI)
Established in 1986 in memory of Gerald V. Hess by his friends, colleagues and family. To be awarded on the basis of recommendation to a student with at least a 'B' average who is entering the third year in a Bachelor of Science degree program at Lakehead University. Student involvement within the university community will be considered. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

Brian Holm Memorial Scholarship
$400 (02-BHMSI)
Awarded to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Business Administration or the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies who has a minimum 80% average, demonstrated community involvement, and financial need. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

Northern Lake Superior Undergraduate Thesis Award
10 awards of $300 (A-NLSAI)
Awarded to a student attending the Thunder Bay Campus who is enrolled in the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies writing their honours thesis on North Lake Superior research. Recipient must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status. A Special Application will be available in the Winter Term prior to registration as a 4th year student for the next Fall/Winter academic year. Special Application is available through the office of the Dean of Science and Environmental Studies.
Deadline: March 18, 2014.

Annie Werbicka Childs Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) Science Engagement Scholarship
2 x $1,250 (A-WCESI)
Awarded to full-time students of high academic standing, 80% and above, entering second or third year of study in any of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies Programs on the basis of academic excellence and participation in extra-curricular science activities. BIOLOGY

Bruce Brian Baziuk, Maurice William Baziuk, and Sylvia Anne Benser Biology Award$100 (BMSBI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Biology to a student entering the fourth year of the Honours Biology program with an average of at least 75% in the work of the previous year, who is undertaking a project in the area of environmental biology. Panu Family Scholarship in Biology
$400 (O-PFBSI)
Awarded to a student with financial need enrolled in the biology program who holds an 80%+ GPA. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

Dr. Thomas Wintermans Memorial Award
$600 (02-TWMAI)
Awarded to a third or fourth year Bachelor of Science or Honours Bachelor of Science student majoring in Biology or Chemistry who has financial need. The recipient must have held a job, played a sport (including recreational) and have given something back to the community within the last twelve months. CHEMISTRY

Dr. Thomas Wintermans Memorial Award
$600 (02-TWMAI)
Awarded to a third or fourth year Bachelor of Science or Honours Bachelor of Science student majoring in Biology or Chemistry who has financial need. The recipient must have held a job, played a sport (including recreational) and have given something back to the community within the last twelve months. COMPUTER SCIENCE

TBayTel Award
$1,000 (A-TBTAI)
Awarded to a student enrolled in a computer science, business or engineering program. Preference will be given to a student who identifies that their parent is a current or retired TBayTel employee. Awarded on the basis of academic standing and community involvement. Financial need will also be considered. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES and GEOLOGY

J.P. Bickell Foundation Mining Award Program
Total Award: $10,000. Number of awarded vary. Minimum award value $2,500 (A-JPBMI)
Awarded on the recommendation of the Senate Undergraduate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee, to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student registered in: BSc or HBSc Geology; BSc Earth Science; HBESc Environmental Studies with Earth Science; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Mechanical Engineering. Students must be enrolled in one of the afore-mentioned disciplines, with a minimum 70% average in the previous year and must demonstrate an interest in the mining industry. The successful recipient will submit a written summary indicating their areas of interest which may include; operational, environmental and geological issues or concerns. Rainy River Resources Ltd. Geology Award
2 x $2,500 (A-RRRAI)
Awarded to two students with financial need who hold a minimum 75% average and are entering their 3rd year of a Geology program. Preference will be given to a child or family member of a Rainy River Resources employee. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.

PHYSICS

Bora Laskin Memorial Scholarship
$350 (BLMSI)
Established in 1975 by the Norman M. Paterson Foundation in memory of the Right Honourable Bora Laskin, who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1971 to 1980. This scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Physics to entrance students majoring in Physics. Awarded on the basis of academic performance and a detailed statement of the applicant's interest and career plans in Physics. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies and/or work in the field of energy and environmental science. In-course students are eligible to apply, only if the scholarship is unawarded at the entrance level. Application available on the Student Awards and Financial Aid website.
