BSc4, BEd (Chemistry Major) J/I

Five Year Program
This program is designed for chemistry students who lack the required B major average to complete the four year HBSc. Students may move to the BSc as early as their Third Year. A cumulative average of 65% in all courses is required. See Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education, Academic Regulation #2, regarding the average in the major.

Students must choose a teachable subject. See Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education, Levels and Teachables.

First Year:
(a) Chemistry 1110, 1130
(b) Mathematics 1171 and 1172
(c) Physics 1211 and 1212
(d) A minimum of one FCE in English, with at least one of the literature courses (English 1111 or 1112)
(e) One FCE elective from: Anthropology 1032, Biology 1110, 1130, Computer Science 1411, 1431, Geology 1110, 1130

Second Year:
(a) Chemistry 2111, 2211, 2231, 2351, 2411, 2412
(b) Mathematics 2111
(c) A half-course elective at the second year level in Physics or Mathematics (excluding Mathematics 2111) or Computer Science
(d) Education 1499 and 2399 (0.5 FCE x 2 = 1 FCE)

Third Year:
(a) Two FCEs in Chemistry (see Note 1)
(b) One half-course elective in Music or Visual Arts
(c) One and one-half FCE electives
(d) Education 2011 (0.5 FCE)
(e) Two Education electives (see Electives in the Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education Courses list)* (.25 FCE x 2 = 0.5 FCE)
*Education 3239 may be taken for credit more than once if the topics are different.
Note:
Concurrent Education students should check the timetable for non-Professional Year course offerings.

Fourth Year:
(a) Three FCEs in Chemistry (see Note 1)
(b) Two FCE electives

Fifth Year (Professional Year):
(a) Core:
(i) Education 4417, 4418 and 4490 (.25 FCE x 2 + 0.5 FCE x 1 = 1 FCE)
(ii) Education 4412, 4413, 4416 (.25 FCE x 3 = .75 FCE)
(b) Curriculum and Instruction in Junior-Intermediate Education:
(i) Education 4112 and 4151 (0.5 FCE x 2 = 1 FCE)
(ii) Education 4113, 4114, 4115, 4116, 4117, 4118, 4119 (.25 FCE x 7 = 1.75 FCEs)
(iii) One Curriculum and Instruction course (.25 FCE) in teaching field selected from: Education 4212, 4216, 4215, 4231, 4214, 4217, 4218, 4232, 4233, 4234, 4235, 4239
(iv) One Education .25 FCE elective (see Electives in the Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education Courses list)*
(c) Student Teaching:
(i) Education 4499 (0.5 FCE)
*Education 3239 and 3259 may be taken for credit more than once if the topics are different.

1. The five FCEs in Chemistry in the Third and Fourth years must include the courses Chemistry 3131, 3251 and 3371.
